The Ghost; For piano, cello and violin
In the early days of what promised to be one of the greatest piano trios of all time, Jacqueline du Pré, Daniel Barenboim and Pinchas Zukerman gather to perform Beethoven's Piano Trio Opus 70 No. 1, known as The Ghost.
The Ghost, dubbed so because of its undeniably-mysterious sound is a masterpiece while the performance is spellbinding and the filming, in the words of the French film and opera director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, "the most successful translation of musical performance onto the screen" that he had ever seen.
Filmed in St John's Smith Square in London on the 12th of May 1970, the performance combines three musicians which are amongst the greatest the century had to offer. Luckily planned before the onset of Jacqueline du Pré's unfortunate illness, the trio are at their best.
